Boop is an app for iPhone and iPad, built on a small, specific pleasure: meeting a dog and wanting to know what it is.
Point the camera at any dog or cat and Boop names the breed, then lifts the animal out of the photo into a die-cut sticker, the kind you would have swapped at school. Each one lands in a collection stamped with the place you met, so the album doubles as a map of where you have walked and who you met there. Behind it sits a Breed Book of 181 written entries: 144 dogs and 37 cats.
Recognition runs entirely on the device using Apple's own frameworks, so photographs are never uploaded to identify anything. There is a Breed Book with a written entry for every breed, a shared leaderboard for people who opt in, and a rarer golden sticker that turns up roughly once in every twenty-five catches.
Boop is made by one independent developer in the United Kingdom, and gives 5% of its revenue to animal charities, publishing what was given and to whom.

Story angles
If the app itself isn't the story, one of these usually is.
- 1 On-device AI that doesn't need your data Every breed guess happens on the device. There is no upload, no server-side model, and no account required to use the app at all, a useful counter-example while most apps are shipping photos to a datacentre.
- 2 One person, 181 breeds The classifier was trained from scratch by a solo developer after Apple's own tooling topped out at 66.8% accuracy. The story of getting from there to something usable is a story about persistence, not machine learning.
- 3 Sticker albums, for adults, about real animals Boop borrows the exact grammar of a Panini album (die-cuts, shinies, a numbered book, the swap) and points it at the dogs on your actual street.
- 4 A map of who you met, not where you went Fitness apps record routes. Boop records the animals, which turns out to be a far more affectionate record of the same walk.
- 5 5% given away, published Not "a portion of proceeds". A fixed share of revenue, with the amounts and recipients published on the website. If it isn't published, it didn't happen.
